Overview

Our Scholarship Program is for local senior high school students enrolled in a state or local college studying botany and related disciplines.

Current Scholarships

The Phyllis Turner Environmental Scholarship – $1,000.00

The Succulent Society Scholarship – $1,000.00

Applicants are asked to submit one single application without regard to a specific scholarship. The Society will match each winning applicant with one or more of the scholarships offered.

For over 52 years, the Succulent Society has proudly awarded more than 65
scholarships (totaling over $24,000.00) to individual students to pursue their
higher education in Botany related fields, such as botanical research, ornamental
horticulture, landscape architecture, pharmacy-medicinal plants, and
environmental-plant sciences.

We strive to continue to offer financial aid for local students from Sarasota schools. Our awards have gone to students attending UF, UCF, Sante Fe College, VA Tech, New College, State College of FL, Manatee Comm. College, FL A&M, and Manatee Jr College

We appreciate your support by becoming a “Lifetime Member”. Help fund the continuation of these awards for more young adults, for years to come!

Scholarship Details

Requirements

Applicants must answer three questions (no more than 400 words each):

1. What are your college and career goals?

2. What are your personal and extra-curricular activities in areas related to the field of botany?

3. What is the most valuable knowledge and/or experience you’ve gained from work related to botany?

Applicants must also provide two references, a written recommendation from a teacher/professor of the school in which they are currently enrolled, and a copy of their most recent transcript.

Completed applications must be submitted to the Sarasota Succulent Society, 1310 38th Street, Sarasota, Florida, 34234-4604, no later than April 10th.

Awards

The Board of Officers of the Sarasota Succulent Society will meet on or about April 10 to discuss all applicant qualifications and decide to whom the scholarship(s) will be awarded. The award will be sent directly to the college or university named on the application for tuition, fees, and/or textbooks.

The award winning student(s) will be informed as soon as the Board makes its decision, typically no later than April 15th. The winner(s) will be honored in person as part of a public program we will present in our Gardens during our annual Mothers Day Weekend Sale, an event we always hold in May on the Saturday immediately preceding Mothers Day.
